Progress Reports and the new Standards Based Grading
I understand that the progress reports will look a little blank. Most of my classes have just taken their first 'Evidence' assessment this week. I have not had a chance to grade all of them yet. They will be done over the weekend and next week.
Allow me to remind you of the scaling in the new Standards Based Grading. Each student is responsible to prove to me that they can/cannot do a particular skill assessed on a scale of 1 - 4. A 4 is extremely rare and means that the student completely understands the material and still exhibited a new understanding or application above and beyond the norm. A 3 is what is expected and means that the student shows proper understanding of the skill. A 2 is OK and means that the student has a firm grasp of the skill but made a minor error. A 1 means that the student is still learning and/or practicing the skill.
If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a holler.
Thanks

MAP Testing Starts Tomorrow
MAP testing is done three times a year covering three subject areas: language usage, reading and math. As teachers, we can see a students growth over time and learn about individual successes and challenges. Therefore, we would like all of our students to get a good nights' sleep and eat a healthy breakfast the days of MAP testing. Thank you for your help.

Online Text Book
I am working with Mrs. Cornish and our text book supplier to get the access codes so that our students can use an online version of our textbook. That way the students do not have to carry the big, heavy book home to do their homework. More details to come...
Third Week
I finally get to start teaching the students math. YES!!! All the course and chapter 1 pre-assessments are done. The information from those assessments will allow me to cater the instruction to each student individually. Homework has been assigned, either yesterday or today. I made the first one easy to help get them going well, i.e. start with small steps and small successes and move up from there.
Remember, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or e-mail me. I will do my best to respond to you within 24 hours.

Second Week
The focus this week has been on school wide and classroom expectations. All pre-assessments have been administered and graded. Four of the six 7th/8th grade classes have been split in half so that Mrs. Cornish and I can work with those classes and students better. I really look forward to this opportunity.
Thursday, I will introduce Standards Based Grading to the students. It will be a BIG transition for them. But, this change was done with their best interest in mind. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please let me know.
Friday, depending on how Thursday goes, I hope to give the students their Chapter 1 pre-assess. That way, come Monday, I can start teaching math!! :)

First Week
The first two days have been fun, frenetic, chaotic, amazing, and heart warming. I love being back at school and meeting all of my students. I appreciate all of the patience that the students have shown so far, especially with the schedules, electives, passing periods, new policies, and short lunches. They blow me away!! Thanks!! :)

Classroom Supplies Still Needed
Hello,
Meet Your Teacher Night was a huge success, or was it just the new lockers?? :) I hope everyone is as excited as I am to start the new year at school. It is going to be a fun year.
I have two requests though; first, please have patience as we get through the next week and half and second, there are a few supplies that I still need for the class: electric pencil sharpener, AA batteries and AAA batteries. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mr. Ripko
